About Megan Marshall

SCHOLAR, WRITER, BIOGRAPHER, REBINDER

Megan Marshall is a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, scholar, and the Charles Wesley Emerson Professor of Creative Writing at Emerson College in Boston. Her acclaimed works include biographies of Margaret Fuller and the Peabody sisters—who were intimately connected to Hawthorne’s world. Marshall first encountered The Scarlet Letter as a high school student in California, and the novel’s complex portrayal of a resilient woman navigating societal constraints inspired her own career path as a chronicler of American lives.

Megan Marshall In The News

Marshall brings unique insight to Hawthorne’s classic through her extensive research into 19th-century New England, including the author’s marriage to Sophia Peabody. Her perspective as a female scholar examining a male author’s depiction of a female protagonist adds a valuable dimension to the reading experience. With Marshall as your guide, discover the historical nuances, personal connections, and enduring questions that make The Scarlet Letter not just a required reading assignment but a genuinely transformative literary journey.

“There is something uncommonly bold about The Scarlet Letter—it gives us a heroine who owns her actions and takes responsibility for them, while showing us the cost of failing to do so.”

I am suddenly seeing what I was missing, marveling at the explosive possibility of interacting in these discussions. I didn't realize how organic the interactions can be. I only had to make one comment, read the response and then follow up, and all of a sudden I was learning unexpected things.
